Contributor Interview: Deena Shoemaker

I’m so excited to welcome our first full-time contributor, Deena Shoemaker. She’ll be posting weekly on all things fashion so make sure to swing over on Fridays! She’s also a fabulous writer and DIYer, so do make sure to check out her blog here. Today, we’ve done an interview so that you can get to know her a bit better!

Leaves turn, their yellowing veins crippled with death. November air bites through the faded remains of summer with bitter exhalation.  A decade is dying, the era of crimped hair and acid wash denim is at abrupt end. Life draws breath. I am born.

They named me Deena and from the moment I could talk I began telling stories. I surrounded myself with art; words, paint, music, crafts, clothes. As long as I was creating I was happy. So I guess, in a nutshell, that’s what you could call me, a creator. And could it be anything lesser, made in the image of The Creator?

WHY FASHION? WHO IS YOUR FASHION ICON?

I wouldn’t by any means call myself an expert on fashion. I enjoy putting colors and styles and patterns t

ogether. I enjoy the beauty of art. And that’s all I believe fashion is, wearable art. I draw most of my inspiration for my outfits from Taylor Swift, Audrey Hepburn, Kate Middleton, and Elizabeth Morrow (of delightfully tacky). I suppose because they most exemplify my personal taste.

IF WE COULD ONLY KNOW TWO THINGS ABOUT YOU, WHAT WOULD THEY BE?

1. I grew up in Europe, Asia, and the United States.

2. I am graduating this spring from Liberty University with a Bachelor of Science in Theology. I will continue my education with a master’s degree in pursuit of my career goal of foreign missions.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

In the most simple of terms, I am motivated by creation. I like taking things that exist and putting them together to make new things. This goes for writing novels, getting dressed, playing music, etc. I am motivated by the beauty and the endless potential in all things.
