The Dogwood and Memories of My Grandfather

My favorite tree flower would have to be the dogwood. There’s a little dogwood tree in my grandmother’s yard, planted after my grandfather died. The stone beneath it with a painted on remembrance that is all but gone commemorates his life. As I walk to the tree, I am met by the maple that my grandfather and I planted a few years before his death. It is now so tall and strong that I can barely shake it anymore. Much like the memories I have of my grandfather.

This time of Holy Week reminds me of the coming of Easter. The line of feast and fasting days has not yet begun, but I can look at the blooms of the dogwood and anticipate the coming celebration of the Resurrection.

Also, this is a surprise/unannounced giveaway. To enter to win this pair of earrings, simply leave a comment on this post. I’ll draw for the winner on Monday. Be sure to leave your email address so I can get in touch if you win!

Happy Wednesday, friends! By the time you all read this, I shall be on my way to Sight and Sound Theatres. Lovely, yes? Thought so.

  1. Cute earrings! I like!! 🙂

I never really thought of feasting days, except perhaps Easter. But we do have fasting on Friday. It's always a bit interesting in our house since we do most of the cooking on Friday, except meat of course.

I'm praying for you this Holy Week — it never ceases to amaze me. Have a lovely time dear! ❤

  2. I love dogwoods. What a great way to remember your grandfather. You have such a beautiful blog. And the earrings are pretty too! What a special thing to giveaway during Easter week.

  3. Oh my word. It is almost as if your grandfather's presence linger in the maple tree — his laughter, his stories, and touch. what a beautiful memory of gardening. I loved this post.

  4. The dogwood tree reminds me of my mother's parents. I can see my granddaddy walking down the steps and ducking his head to avoid being hit in the head by the dogwood near the back steps. They had several dogwoods in their yard. My aunt lives there and the trees remain to this day. The earrings are gorgeous! momaloft4@gmail.com

  5. That is so beautiful. It makes me cry! Even by reading only one paragraph of this post, I can see that you and your grandfather had a truly unique bond.

I am lucky I still have both my grandfathers, but I remember when my great-grandfather died. It was so sad. It made me wish that I could have treasured every moment with him that much more! I guess we don't know what we have, until it is gone.
