As many of you know, I’ve been pretty excited about the newest Narnia movie, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. It happens to be my favorite book in the Narnian series. Needless to say, I wasn’t thrilled when I heard how different the movie is from the book.
My biggest qualm, I think, is the fact that they obliterated a lot of the action on the Lone Islands, where Caspian removes the governor of the Lone Islands, and sets up Lord Bern as governor. In the book, it’s absolutely hysterical, and the BBC movie version kept that.
However, the new international trailer makes me happier, especially since I recognize many of the scenes as ones from the book. The seven swords, which many people have qualms with, are an interesting new feature. I’m not unhappy with them, but I am curious to see what they do. I think that they’ll destroy the Dark Island, but that’s only a guess.
(If you have absolutely no idea what I’m talking about, don’t worry. If you want to read the book, I would definitely recommend it.)

Oooh! I like! I've liked the previous two movies…we've gone to see them in theaters, which we don't often do. However it's been years since I read the books. I think we read most of them aloud when I was 8 or 9 years old….a long time ago.
The trailers do look very exciting though!! I love that scene where there's the woman who's their "guide" and she asks if she has to change forms, and then the two men are like…no! Epic! I'm glad we get a chance to see Edmund grown up. I always used to be a big Peter fan, but maybe that's because Edmund was nasty back then. 😛
Hmm…I really do want to re-read the Narnia series, now that I'm older with new eyes. I've heard a comparison that the Harry Potter series will remain popular for generations after this just as the Narnia series has remained popular ever since it was published in the 1940s.
I'm still excited for HP though. There are 3 movies I was excited for this year (2010). The Last Airbender from the summer….a little disappointing unfortunately; Harry Potter 7 – epically excited for, and I know it will be sooooo fantastic; and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader – which I haven't been excited for, but now that's it's coming up fast, I'll probably start feeling the anticipation. 😛
OK…time for me to get back to my history questions. UGH!

It looks a lot more animated than some of the others, I wonder if that will be a distraction. But overall, it looks like it will be a good one! I sure hope so.

Elizabeth, I'm not picking a fight here (I don't think), but I think Narnia will endure as long if not longer than Harry Potter. I've never read or seen any HP, but none-the-less. I may be wrong, though, I suppose. (-:
I don't know if I've seen those trailers yet…and I thought I was totally caught up! I get all the emails…check all the links…etc. (-: I'll have to watch them ASAP. Can't from this computer, since it's REALLY slow.
Wow, I hadn't seen either of these!!! So excited to watch the movie now! 😀 😀 :D.
Oh, and Charity, I believe her point was that Narnia has already lasted for generations, and that some people believe that Harry Potter will as well-not that HP will outlast Narnia in any way, but that it's popularity might someday be found to have lasted just as long :).
Thanks for sharing the trailers, Amanda! I especially love the second one :D. And the deal with the swords… I don't know what to make of it, but I always try and look at movies and the books from which they come separately as well as comparatively. I love the books dearly, and am looking forward to seeing this as a movie, and just looking at it as a movie it looks great! The reason I'm letting myself get excited is because it actually does look like they maintained certain elements from the book, and I'm cautiously curious how it will all play out with the different things they added. Anyway, thanks again for sharing this! Can't wait to see it! 😀

Yeah Charity, that's what I meant. 🙂 Personally, I like HP more than Narnia…so I'm raving about Harry Potter. But also commenting on how Narnia has been popular so long. 🙂 Narnia will most likely continue to be popular years away too!

Sweeeet! I have the first HP book, but haven't started on it yet, since I'm working on Nano. My novel so far deals with a school for magicians, so I don't want to copy anything by accident.
My dad read the series to my sisters and me multiple times when we were little (I almost have them memorized), but I might do a quick reread on the Voyage of the Dawn Treader before I go to see the movie. 🙂
I, personally, don't think it will, but that's just my opinion. The animation is definitely a lot more visible here, but the first two were fairly animated as well. We shall see! I'm so excited to see the movie!

In terms of longevity, I think both are classics, at least when it comes to fantasy. And a classic is timeless. 🙂
No problem! I love keeping everyone posted on the movie. 🙂 I definitely agree that we need to look at the movies and books separately as well. That's why I liked Prince Caspian, because I didn't over-compare it too the book, although I could definitely make a list of the things that the filmmakers added. 😛 I'm sort of obsessive like that.
As I just said to Charity – both are fantasy classics, in my opinion. So I think both will, and do have a lasting impact, regardless of which has the larger impact.
In all honesty, I'm rather disappointed with how much liberty being taken in the story line and characters. I'm an avid Narnia fan and have been ever since my mom read the series to me as a little girl. As an adult now, I see the beauty of the stories and the amazing mind of C.S. Lewis; I don't think the stories need any help! I've seen the other two films and thought the first one was pretty good and simply tried to pretend the second one wasn't really based off of Prince Caspian and just enjoy it for what it was. I'm not surprised that VOTDT has departed from the original story as well, but it still saddens me.
On a lighter note, the action looks amazing! I love the actors. This is a movie I will go to see in theaters if I can, but it will be mostly to see a "new" story and not to relive the old adventure of Narnia. I just hope that the writers included some of the amazing allegorical parts of the book.
Thanks for the reveiw… I hadn't seen the second trailer before and it made me feel better at least about the "epic" part of the film.
